The advantages of RFID tags have been seen across a number of sectors and the benefits accrued are now well accepted. In a recent attempt to expand their usage, researchers at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are conducting studies to determine if the technology can be deployed to track firefighters and other first responders inside buildings. They would also be studying if the technology can be used to help them navigate under hazardous conditions.
The research basically attempts at placing these tags in buildings to help in determining the location of a first responder and providing information to a small handheld device. The device would include an RFID reader and a navigation unit.
This could be a low cost and reliable alternative to the Global Positioning System used in most buildings. The research would help in determining firstly, if this would be effective. Following that, it would define the parameters to be taken into consideration to determine the number of tags that would be needed and where should these be placed.
