Classification Of RFID Tags

Radio Frequency Identification tags are being used for a number of purposes across different sectors. These tags can be of three types, that is namely, passive, semi-passive or semi-active and active tags. The classification is based on their source of power supply.

RFID tags are known as passive tags if they do not have internal power supply. These make use of the electrical current induced by the incoming radio frequency signal and use this to transmit a response. As a result, though these tags do not have internal power supply, at the same time they do not require batteries. These are usually quite small and have an unlimited life span. Also, these are cheaper to manufacture and are therefore more economical than other RFID tags. So far, mostly passive RFID tags are being used. These have read distances ranging from about 2 mm up to a few meters.

Semi-passive RFID tags have a small battery. Other than this addition, they are more or less the same as passive RFID tags. These are faster in responding and collating data as compared to passive tags. These are also known as semi active RFID tags.

Active RFID tags have their own internal power source. These have a larger read distance as compared to passive and semi passive RFID tags. They also have larger memory. These are slightly larger than the passive and semi passive tags and are priced higher. As a result, so far their usage is quite limited.
