RFID has found many uses, but the latest among them has thrown open new ideas among the security industry and medical professionals. A Vein Scan developed with the help of RFID technology by a Memphis based biotech company called Luminetx can serve as an unique identification for any individual.
The vein scan consists of running a infrared scan of the blood cells of a person that runs through his or her veins. It then collects data about the vein's structure, analyzes it and stores it as a set of data that is unique to the individual.
Similar to fingerprints, the vein structure of each individual is supposed to be unique. Luminetx has got a patent for the process and plans to use the technology not only for medical uses but also among the financial industry for specific biometric identification of individuals.
While doctors will now find it easier to give injections to patients, in the commercial world forgery or identity thefts will become that much more difficult. Similar research and work has also been done in Japan by the company Fujitsu. Mobile Mag reports:
The company invented the process, naturally enough, to help medical professional find veins in patients who needed injections. But sensing an opportunity, Luminetx is now marketing the technology to financial institutions and homeland security officials as an alternative to other, more controversial biometric identification tools.
