RFID for sports lovers

A new RFID trial is being held for sports lovers that will allow them to download pictures of their favorite players and video clips with the help of their cell phones and other small personal electronic devices. The experiment is being conducted at Atlanta's Philips Arena and involves 250 season ticket holders of the Atlanta Thrashers hockey team and the Atlanta Hawks Basketball team.

The trial is part of the near field communication (NFC) technology. The technology will allow fans to download news, graphics and promotional video clips. The payment function in the trial will be  introduced in January 2006 for these fans.

The cellular service for the experiment is being provided by Cingular Wireless, while ViVOtech is supplying the RFID payment system. ABI Research foresees the use of this new technology (NFC) in more than 50% of all mobile handsets by 2010. This is the first time that such a large scale trial of the RFID enabled NFC technology was being held in the United States. rfidjournal.com reports:

"Our goal is to give our fans ways to expand upon their experience with us while they're in the arena, and even outside our four walls," says David Lee, vice president of business development for Atlanta Spirit. "And we're getting direct feedback from the fans. They're saying 'this is great, and this what I'd also like to see,' and this is helping us with our development."
